How it works

The Mugwort Calming Deep Cleansing Oil is a 200ml cleansing oil, used as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin and dry hands, before any water reaches the face. The plant extract it is built around is Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract, named thirtieth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract and Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, so the plant extract is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cleansing oil format rather than by the list alone. Isntree sells this Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract cleansing oil in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract, the plant extract this cleansing oil is built around
  • Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract and Corallina Officinalis Extract on the same list, plant extracts
  • Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract and Melia Azadirachta Bark Extract further down the same list
  • Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract and Houttuynia Cordata Extract further down the same list
  • Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract named thirtieth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extractplant extract

Artemisia Princeps is Korean mugwort, one of the country's oldest skincare and bathing plants. Its leaf extract is used for the look of reddened, reactive skin, and it is the ingredient behind the mugwort category. The name on the box points at it, and it is named thirtieth on this cleansing oil's own ingredient list.

Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extractplant extract

Turmeric Root Extract carries curcuminoids, well studied plant antioxidants. It is used for the look of dullness and uneven tone, and it tints a formula faintly yellow. It is named thirteenth on this cleansing oil's list, alongside Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract.

Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extractplant extract

Melia Azadirachta is neem. Its leaf and flower extracts are long-standing Ayurvedic ingredients, and Korean formulas use them in products aimed at the look of congested, blemish-prone skin. It is named fifteenth on this cleansing oil's list, alongside Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract.

Coccinia Indica Fruit Extractplant extract

Coccinia Indica is ivy gourd. Its fruit extract is used as a conditioning, hydrating plant extract in Korean formulas. The panel names it eighteenth on this cleansing oil's list, beside Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract.

Corallina Officinalis Extractplant extract

Corallina Officinalis is coral seaweed, which holds calcium and magnesium in its structure. Its extract is used as a mineral-rich conditioning ingredient. The panel names it twenty-first on this cleansing oil's list, beside Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract.

How to use

  1. Use the Mugwort Calming Deep Cleansing Oil as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin and dry hands, before any water reaches the face.
  2. Two or three full pumps, massaged over dry skin for a full minute so sunscreen and makeup have time to dissolve.
  3. Add a little water and keep massaging until it turns milky, rinse, then follow with a water-based cleanser. That second wash is what takes the oil off.
  4. Once a day, in the evening. Do not use it as your morning cleanse; there is nothing on a face at seven in the morning that needs an oil to lift it.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before a first full-face application if skin tends to react easily.
  • Store away from direct sunlight and high heat to keep the texture and scent stable over time.
  • Introduce one new active at a time when adding this into an existing routine.
