Water solvent: Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
Glycerin humectant: Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride emollient: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is the light fraction of coconut oil, with the heavy parts removed. It is the workhorse emollient of modern formulas: it softens skin, dissolves oil-soluble actives and absorbs without the greasy weight of a whole plant oil.

How it works

This closes a routine and the appeal is that it does not try to do anything else, which is what makes it easy to keep constant while you change other steps. The texture is medium weight and sinks in rather than staying visible, so it works morning and night. Because it is the outermost leave-on layer, everything thinner goes on before it and nothing follows. A treatment cream at the same step would be doing two jobs at once and would be harder to judge. Judge it on how the skin feels four hours after you apply it.

Apply it last among your leave-on steps, after your toner and any serum.
Press a small amount over slightly damp skin rather than rubbing until it disappears.
Keep this step constant while you introduce or pause other products, so you can tell what caused what.
Do not layer a second moisturiser over it, because two closing steps means one of them is wasted.
