How it works
A sheet mask holds a serum-level essence against the skin under a fabric sheet for a set number of minutes, which is longer, closer contact than pressing a serum on with your hands. That is why it is treated as an occasional treatment step rather than a daily habit, layered in on top of an otherwise normal routine rather than replacing it. After removing it, pressing in the remaining essence rather than rinsing it off is what makes the most of a single sheet. A fair trial means giving it the same handful of uses you would give any new step before deciding whether it earns a permanent place in your routine. Consistency across days does more for a fair read than any single application, since a genuine change in how skin looks or feels builds gradually rather than all at once.
Key benefits
- A sheet mask built specifically for its place as a weekly or twice-weekly mask step
- Carries NEOGEN's own formulation approach into a sheet mask format
- Sourced for the Korean market, the same Black Caviar Essential Mask 23ml x 10ea sold on shelves in Korea
- A format built around one clear job rather than trying to double as something else
- Carries its original Korean-market barcode and batch code intact
- Part of NEOGEN's wider range, built for the same routine step every time
How to use
- After cleansing and toning, unfold the sheet over the face for the time stated on the pack, remove, then press any remaining essence into the skin before your moisturizer.
How often should I use Black Caviar Essential Mask 23ml x 10ea?
A sheet mask is an occasional treatment step, a couple of times a week at most for most people, rather than a daily basic in a routine. As with any new step, give it a fair, consistent trial of a week or two before you decide whether to keep it in your routine, and stop if you notice ongoing irritation rather than pushing through it.
Do I rinse it off after?
No, pat the remaining essence into the skin rather than rinsing, and follow with your moisturizer. As with any new step, give it a fair, consistent trial of a week or two before you decide whether to keep it in your routine, and stop if you notice ongoing irritation rather than pushing through it.
Is this the same formula sold in Korea, or a version made for the US market?
This is the Korean-market formula, the same one sold on shelves in Korea rather than a version reformulated for US retail.
Can I use this if my skin runs sensitive?
This sheet mask is formulated with skin types like normal or dry skin in mind, but any new product is worth a patch test first if your skin reacts easily. A short patch test on the inside of your arm or behind an ear before it goes on your face is worth doing, and that goes for sensitive skin most of all.
How long before I will know if this is right for my skin?
Give it a full week or two of consistent use before you judge, since a single use rarely tells you much either way. Watch for how skin feels and looks rather than for any specific number, and stop use if you notice ongoing irritation.

33 of 36 explained
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Peg/ppg-17/6 Copolymer solvent
- PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer is a water-soluble polymer used as a humectant and solubiliser. It keeps a formula fluid and helps oils stay dispersed.
- 1,2-hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Glycereth-26 humectant
- Glycereth-26 is a modified glycerin that hydrates with far less stickiness than glycerin itself. It is a common way to load water into a formula that has to stay light.
- Peg-32 humectant
- PEG-32 is a longer polyethylene glycol. It is a humectant that also adds a little body to a watery formula.
- Peg-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil emulsifier
- PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a castor-oil-derived solubiliser. It is what keeps fragrance and oil-soluble ingredients dissolved in a watery formula so it stays clear.
- Acrylates/c10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer thickener
- This is a carbomer relative with fatty side chains, so it thickens and stabilises an emulsion at the same time. It gives a light gel-cream body rather than a heavy one.
- Arginine amino acid
- Arginine is an amino acid that does two jobs here: it holds water in the outer layer of skin, and it neutralises acidic gelling agents, which is why it often stands in for a synthetic pH adjuster.
- Panthenol humectant
- Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
21 more explained
- Xanthan Gum thickener
- Xanthan Gum is a polysaccharide made by fermenting sugar. It thickens a watery formula into a gel and holds the whole thing in suspension so nothing separates. Too much of it and a serum turns stringy, which is why it appears in fractions of a percent.
- Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer thickener
- This is the thickener behind most gel-cream textures. It builds a soft, bouncy gel that collapses to a light fluid as it is rubbed in.
- Adenosine active
- Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated.
- Phaseolus Radiatus Seed Extract plant extract
- Mung bean seed extract, the nokdu of Korean cleansing powders. It carries starches, proteins and saponins and is used as a conditioning, mildly cleansing extract.
- Dextrin thickener
- Dextrin is a starch fragment used to thicken and to give a formula a light, powdery finish. It is also a common carrier for powdered extracts.
- Theobroma Cacao (cocoa) Extract plant extract
- Cocoa Extract carries polyphenols and a little caffeine. It is used as an antioxidant plant extract and gives a faint warm tint.
- Maltodextrin film former
- Maltodextrin is a starch-derived sugar chain used to carry powdered extracts and to form a light film. It also gives a soft, smoothing feel.
- Carthamus Tinctorius Flower Extract plant extract
- Safflower Flower Extract is a traditional East Asian dye and skincare plant. It is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract and can tint a formula.
- Sodium Hyaluronate humectant
- Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
- Rumex Crispus Root Extract plant extract
- Yellow dock root extract. The root carries anthraquinones and tannins and can tint a formula, and it is used as an astringent botanical.
- Caviar Extract protein
- Caviar Extract is an extract of sturgeon roe, carrying proteins, amino acids and lipids. It is a fish-derived ingredient.
- Rubus Coreanus Fruit Extract plant extract
- Bokbunja, the Korean black raspberry used for wine and tea. Its fruit extract is unusually rich in anthocyanins and is used as a plant antioxidant.
- Ribes Nigrum (blackcurrant) Fruit Extract plant extract
- Blackcurrant fruit extract, unusually high in vitamin C and anthocyanins. It is used as a plant antioxidant.
- Vaccinium Angustifolium (blueberry) Fruit Extract plant extract
- Lowbush blueberry fruit extract, high in anthocyanins. Berry extracts are used as plant antioxidants and can tint a formula.
- Oryza Sativa (rice) Extract plant extract
- Rice Extract is the anchor of the Korean rice-skincare category. It carries starches, amino acids and ferulic acid, and it is used for the look of dullness and for a soft, blurred finish.
- Euterpe Oleracea (acai) Fruit Extract plant extract
- Acai fruit extract, from the Amazonian palm berry. It carries anthocyanins, the same purple pigment polyphenols found in blueberry, and is used as a plant antioxidant.
- Sambucus Nigra Fruit Extract plant extract
- Elderberry fruit extract, rich in anthocyanins. It is used as a plant antioxidant.
- Morus Alba Fruit Extract plant extract
- White mulberry fruit extract. It carries anthocyanins and fruit acids and is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract, while the root bark of the same plant is used for tone.
- Phenoxyethanol preservative
- Phenoxyethanol is the most widely used cosmetic preservative outside the paraben family. It keeps a water-containing formula from growing bacteria and mould, and is capped at one percent in most markets, so it always sits low on a list.
- Disodium Edta chelator
- EDTA is a chelator: it locks up trace metal ions from water and packaging that would otherwise turn a formula cloudy, off-colour or rancid. It does nothing to skin and appears at a fraction of a percent.
- Fragrance fragrance
- Fragrance, or Parfum, is a single declaration standing for a whole scent blend, which can be dozens of materials. Regulators allow it as a trade secret, so a list showing only this word does not say what the scent is made of. It is the most common trigger named by people with reactive skin.

Worth knowing
- Patch test a new mask on the jaw first if your skin reacts easily to something new.
- Do not leave a sheet mask on well past its stated time; a dried-out sheet can pull moisture from skin rather than give it.
