Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Coco-Betaine surfactant

Coco-Betaine is a coconut-derived secondary surfactant used to build foam and make a cleanser milder.

Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate surfactant

Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate is a mild cleanser that makes a dense, creamy foam. It is one of the gentlest surfactants that still lathers properly.

Sodium Chloride thickener

Sodium Chloride is salt. In a cleanser it thickens the liquid; in a mask or essence it balances the mineral content of the water phase. It has no active role.

Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer thickener

This is a carbomer relative with fatty side chains, so it thickens and stabilises an emulsion at the same time. It gives a light gel-cream body rather than a heavy one.

Tromethamine pH adjuster

Tromethamine neutralises acidic thickeners such as carbomer so they gel, and holds a formula near skin-friendly pH. It is used at a fraction of a percent.

Hydroxyacetophenone preservative booster

Hydroxyacetophenone is an antioxidant that also strengthens a preservative system, so a formula needs less traditional preservative. Korean formulas pair it with 1,2-hexanediol constantly.

Panthenol (3,000 ppm) humectant

Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.

Allantoin active

Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin.

Bambusa Vulgaris Extract (50 ppm) plant extract

Bamboo extract. Bamboo concentrates silica as it grows, so the extract is used as a hydrating, mineral-bearing ingredient.

Lauric Acid fatty acid

Lauric Acid is the coconut fatty acid that gives soap-style cleansers their dense foam. It is not well suited to blemish-prone skin at high levels.

Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil fragrance component

Tea Tree Leaf Oil is an essential oil from an Australian shrub, carrying terpinen-4-ol. Korean formulas use it in products aimed at blemish-prone skin; it is potent, aromatic, and one of the essential oils most likely to bother reactive skin.
