How it works

A cleansing balm is the first step of a double cleanse, and its job is dissolving what water cannot: sunscreen, foundation, and the oil the day leaves behind. This one is a solid balm that melts on contact, built on sunflower seed oil, evening primrose oil, grape seed oil and meadowfoam seed oil rather than a mineral oil base. It carries a protease as well, which is why it feels like it keeps working while you massage rather than simply sitting there. It goes on a dry face with dry hands, and it turns milky when you add water so it rinses without a film. Follow it with a foaming or gel cleanser, because a balm is the first half of the step and not the whole of it.

Key benefits

  • Balm to oil to milk: dissolves makeup and sunscreen, then rinses without an oily film
  • Sunflower, evening primrose, grape seed and meadowfoam seed oils condition while they cleanse
  • Ulleungdo sea water brings the Dokdo line's mineral base into the balm step
  • Tocopherol rounds out the oil phase as an antioxidant

Key actives

Sea Water

the line's signature mineral ingredient

Tocopherol

vitamin E to keep the oil phase fresh

Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil

a light, fast-rinsing conditioning oil

How to use

  1. Use the 1025 Dokdo Cleansing Balm as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin, before any water reaches the face.
  2. One scoop with the spatula, warmed between fingertips until it turns to oil, then massaged over dry skin for a minute.
  3. Emulsify with a little water until it goes milky, rinse, then follow with a water-based cleanser and your toner.
  4. Once a day, in the evening. Do not skip the second cleanse after it; a balm that is only rinsed leaves a film the next layer has to sit on.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before first use on the face, especially if trying this brand or formula for the first time.
  • Store away from direct sunlight and heat so the formula and any actives inside stay stable through its shelf life.
