- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Hydrogenated Palm Acid fatty acid
- Hydrogenated Palm Acid is the saturated fatty acid fraction of palm oil. It thickens, stiffens a stick, and is often part of the soap base in a cleansing bar.
- Potassium Hydroxide pH adjuster
- Potassium Hydroxide is a strong base used in traces to raise a formula to its target pH. In a soap-style cleanser it also converts fatty acids into the surfactant that does the cleansing.
- Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate surfactant
- Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate is a coconut-and-glycine surfactant used in low-pH cleansers. It foams well and rinses without the squeaky tightness a soap leaves.
- Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract plant extract
- Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant. Green tea leaf extract carries catechins, among the most studied plant antioxidants, and is used for the look of redness and oily shine.
- Cladosiphon Okamuranus Extract plant extract
- Cladosiphon Okamuranus is Okinawan mozuku seaweed, the main commercial source of fucoidan. Its extract is used as a hydrating polysaccharide ingredient.
- White Willow Bark Extract plant extract
- Willow Bark Extract carries salicin, the plant compound salicylic acid is related to. The two are not interchangeable: willow bark is a mild clarifying extract, not a BHA exfoliant at the levels used in cosmetics.
- Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract plant extract
- Coffee Seed Extract carries caffeine and chlorogenic acid. It is used as an antioxidant extract and, in eye and body formulas, for the look of puffiness.
- Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Leaf Extract plant extract
- Bergamot Leaf Extract is the water-based leaf extract rather than the peel oil, so it is far milder and much less aromatic.
- Salicylic Acid exfoliant
- Salicylic Acid is a BHA, and the only common exfoliant that is oil soluble, so it can work inside a pore rather than only on the surface. It loosens the dead cells that block pores and is used for the look of congested, oily skin.
- Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract (10.6ppm) plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

- Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract plant extract
- Gardenia Fruit Extract is the traditional East Asian yellow dye plant. In skincare it is used as an antioxidant extract, and it can tint a formula.
- Glycoproteins (0.2ppm) protein
- Glycoproteins are proteins carrying sugar chains, usually supplied by a ferment. They hold water and leave a conditioning film.
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid exfoliant
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid is salicylic acid with a fatty tail, sometimes sold as LHA. It stays nearer the surface than salicylic acid and works at a higher pH, so it exfoliates more evenly and more gently.

- Dextrin thickener
- Dextrin is a starch fragment used to thicken and to give a formula a light, powdery finish. It is also a common carrier for powdered extracts.
- Decyl Glucoside surfactant
- Decyl Glucoside is a sugar and coconut-derived surfactant, one of the mildest cleansers available. It produces a soft, low foam and rinses without stripping.
- Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer thickener

How to use
- Use the Pine Calming Cica Cleanser as your first step, morning and evening, on a face already wet with lukewarm water.
- A short pump or a pea of product is enough. Work it into a lather in wet hands for about twenty seconds before it touches the face.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and go straight on to your toner while skin is still damp, because a humectant layer has more to hold on to on a damp face.
- Twice a day is the ceiling. Do not follow it with a second cleanse in the morning, when there is no sunscreen or makeup left on the face to remove.
Worth knowing
- Keep to lukewarm rather than hot water, since hot water is what leaves a cleanser feeling stripping.
- Cut back to once daily if the skin feels tight rather than clean afterward.
