Key actives

Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Madecassoside

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams.

Madecassic Acid

Madecassic Acid is the fourth centella triterpene. A list that names all four is telling you the extract was standardised rather than simply pressed, which is the difference between a cica claim and a cica formula.

Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate

This is a stabiliser that keeps the oils and fragrance in a formula from oxidising. Its job is the shelf life of the product rather than any effect on skin.

Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Flower Extract

Safflower Flower Extract is a traditional East Asian dye and skincare plant. It is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract and can tint a formula.

Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract

Gardenia Fruit Extract is the traditional East Asian yellow dye plant. In skincare it is used as an antioxidant extract, and it can tint a formula.

How to use

  1. Use the Pine Cica Deep Pore Cleansing Oil as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin and dry hands, before any water reaches the face.
  2. Two or three full pumps, massaged over dry skin for a full minute so sunscreen and makeup have time to dissolve.
  3. Add a little water and keep massaging until it turns milky, rinse, then follow with a water-based cleanser. That second wash is what takes the oil off.
  4. Once a day, in the evening. Do not use it as your morning cleanse; there is nothing on a face at seven in the morning that needs an oil to lift it.

How it works

The panel on this cleansing oil names six forms of centella asiatica rather than one: Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Madecassoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid. On this panel it sits alongside Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Flower Extract and Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract. This is a stabiliser that keeps the oils and fragrance in a formula from oxidising. Its job is the shelf life of the product rather than any effect on skin.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before first use on the face, especially if trying this brand or formula for the first time.
  • Store away from direct sunlight and heat so the formula and any actives inside stay stable through its shelf life.
