How it works

Salicylic Acid is named on the ingredient panel on this toner. Salicylic Acid is a BHA, and the only common exfoliant that is oil soluble, so it can work inside a pore rather than only on the surface. It loosens the dead cells that block pores and is used for the look of congested, oily skin. On this panel it sits alongside Niacinamide, Gluconolactone and Methyl Diisopropyl Propionamide. Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

Key actives

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a BHA, and the only common exfoliant that is oil soluble, so it can work inside a pore rather than only on the surface. It loosens the dead cells that block pores and is used for the look of congested, oily skin.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

Gluconolactone

Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. Its molecule is too large to penetrate quickly, so it smooths the surface without the sting of an AHA, and it is a humectant at the same time.

Methyl Diisopropyl Propionamide

A synthetic cooling agent that gives the cool feeling of menthol without the mint smell. It is used where a formula wants the sensation but not the scent.

How to use

  1. Pour onto a cotton pad or clean hands and press across the face immediately after cleansing, while skin is still damp.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before a first full application if you are trying a new Korean formula for the first time, since a fragrance or botanical extract that suits most skin can still be the one thing an individual complexion does not tolerate.
  • Introduce any new Korean-market formula on its own for the first few uses before layering it with the rest of an existing routine, so any reaction is easy to trace to a single product.

What professionals say

What professionals say

What skin-care professionals say about the key actives in this formula, quoted from the medical sources linked beside each.

  • BHAs like salicylic acid get really deep into the pores, whereas the water-soluble ones don't go as deep.

Samantha Stein, PA-CDermatology physician assistant, Cleveland Clinic
  • Niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of pores in a few ways. By strengthening the skin barrier and improving elasticity, pores appear less noticeable and more even.

    Ashlyn YankeAesthetician, Cleveland Clinic
1 more professional perspective
  • This means that gluconolactone acts as an exfoliating acid, but also as a moisturizer. It has moisturizing, soothing, and lightening properties, working well on dry skin.
