How it works

Collagen is named on the ingredient panel on this mask. Collagen is the structural protein that makes up most of the dermis. Applied on top it is far too large to enter skin, so in a formula it works as a humectant and a smoothing film former. On this panel it sits alongside Niacinamide, Chondrus Crispus Powder and Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract. Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

Key actives

Collagen

Collagen is the structural protein that makes up most of the dermis. Applied on top it is far too large to enter skin, so in a formula it works as a humectant and a smoothing film former.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

Chondrus Crispus Powder

Chondrus Crispus is Irish moss, a red seaweed. It is loaded with carrageenan, so it hydrates and thickens at once, and it leaves a cushioned, slippery film.

Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract

Peppermint leaf extract, the water-based extract rather than the essential oil, so it carries far less menthol. It is used as a refreshing herbal extract.

How to use

  1. Use the Deep Collagen Power Boosting Mask after toner, in place of your serum step, in the evening.
  2. Prepare the skin with toner. Spread the mask sheet evenly over the face. Remove mask after 30 to 40 minutes. Gently pat face until essence is fully absorbed.
  3. Take it off at the time printed on the pack, pat in the essence left behind rather than rinsing, then go straight to your moisturizer.
  4. Two or three evenings a week is a normal rhythm. Do not leave it on past its time; a sheet that has gone dry takes moisture back off the face as it goes.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on a small area first and wait a day before full use, especially the first time.

What skin-care professionals say about the key actives in this formula, quoted from the medical sources linked beside each.

  • Topical collagen is a very large molecule that's too big to absorb into the skin.

  • Niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of pores in a few ways. By strengthening the skin barrier and improving elasticity, pores appear less noticeable and more even.
