How it works
Papain leads the ingredient panel on this exfoliant. Papain is a protein-cutting enzyme from papaya. Enzyme exfoliants act on protein rather than on the bonds an acid targets, and they need water to work, which is why they suit powder washes.

- Papain named on this product's own ingredient panel, near the top of it

How do I know this is authentic and not a US-reformulated version?
Check the box against the listing: an authentic Korean-market SKU carries Korean-primary packaging and an intact Korean-market batch code, not a US-only relabel. THE FACE SHOP's Korean-market formulas are sourced specifically to preserve that, rather than substituted for the US-shelf version some retailers carry under the same name.
When in a routine should I use this skincare formula?
Use it as the routine step, AM and PM, worked into the wider routine. Placing a skincare formula out of order is the most common reason a Korean routine feels like it is not working, so keep this one at its own step rather than doubling it up with a product built for a different stage. Give it a few weeks at that placement before judging the result.
Is this the same formula sold in Korea, or a US version?
This is the authentic Korean-market version of the formula, not a US-shelf substitute. THE FACE SHOP sells a separate reformulation on some US shelves, and this listing is not that version. The Korean-market batch coding and packaging travel with it, which is the detail worth checking against the box on arrival.
What does Papain do in this formula?
Papain is a protein-cutting enzyme from papaya. Enzyme exfoliants act on protein rather than on the bonds an acid targets, and they need water to work, which is why they suit powder washes. It is named on this product's own ingredient panel.
What does Sodium Hyaluronate do in this formula?
Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, one of the most efficient water-binding molecules used in skincare. It is the workhorse hydrator behind the plump, dewy finish Korean essences and ampoules are known for. It sits at its own position on this product's own ingredient list rather than being assumed from the product name.
Not on the ingredient list below: fragrance or parfum, denatured or SD alcohol, essential oils, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.
Full INCI (13): Water/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, PEG-8, Steartrimonium Methosulfate, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Papain, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Triethylhexanoin, Cetrimonium Chloride, Isopropyl Alcohol, Parfum/Fragrance

10 of 13 explained
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- PEG-8 humectant
- PEG-8 is a short polyethylene glycol chain. It holds water, keeps a formula fluid, and dissolves ingredients water alone cannot.
- Steartrimonium Methosulfate surfactant
- A positively charged conditioning agent for hair. Despite the name the methosulfate part is not a cleansing sulfate and does not foam.
- Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer thickener
- This is a carbomer relative with fatty side chains, so it thickens and stabilises an emulsion at the same time. It gives a light gel-cream body rather than a heavy one.
- Papain exfoliant
- Papain is a protein-cutting enzyme from papaya. Enzyme exfoliants act on protein rather than on the bonds an acid targets, and they need water to work, which is why they suit powder washes.
- Sodium Hyaluronate humectant
- Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Triethylhexanoin emollient
- Triethylhexanoin is a light ester emollient that softens skin and disperses pigment. It absorbs cleanly and is often used to thin a heavy oil phase.
- Isopropyl Alcohol solvent
- Isopropyl Alcohol is rubbing alcohol. It dissolves ingredients water cannot, evaporates quickly, and in quantity can leave skin feeling tight.
