How it works
TONYMOLY built this 190ml gel, part of the Intense Care Gold 24k Snail line around one job: a leave on or rinse off step, used where the routine calls for a lighter touch. The format is a cooling, water based gel, matched to that placement rather than doubling as an earlier or later step. TONYMOLY built its name on approachable, everyday Korean skincare and makeup, sold in Olive Young and its own stores across Korea long before it reached US shelves.
Key benefits
- What it is: a 190ml gel from TONYMOLY, from the Intense Care Gold 24k Snail line.
- Texture and use: a cooling, water based gel, used as a leave on or rinse off step, used where the routine calls for a lighter touch.
- Original Korean Formula: the version sold on Korean shelves, not a US reformulation.
- Sourced for the Korean market, with the packaging and barcode left intact.
Inside the formula
Inside the formula
Will this leave my skin feeling stripped?
It is designed to lift makeup, sunscreen and daily grime without leaving skin feeling tight afterward. Emulsify it with a little water before rinsing, and follow with a toner right away if your skin still feels dry.
Do I need a second cleanser after this?
Most people follow it with a foam cleanser at night to remove any oily residue, though a light-makeup day can sometimes get by on the oil cleanse alone. Adjust based on how your skin feels afterward.
Can I use this in the morning?
It is built as the first half of a PM double cleanse, so most routines skip it in the morning unless you wore heavy sunscreen overnight, which is unusual. If your skin reacts in a way that feels off, stop use and give your skin a few days to settle before trying it again.
Is it safe around the eyes?
Yes, it is commonly used to remove eye makeup as well as the rest of the face, though you should avoid getting product directly in the eye and rinse promptly if that happens.
How much should I use?
A palm-sized amount is typical for the whole face; use less on a smaller area or more if you are removing heavy, long-wear makeup. If your skin reacts in a way that feels off, stop use and give your skin a few days to settle before trying it again.

42 of 52 explained
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- dipropylene glycol humectant
- Dipropylene Glycol is a glycol used as a solvent and a light humectant. Its main job is keeping the rest of the formula dissolved and the texture fluid rather than adding hydration of its own.
- butylene glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- polysorbate 20 emulsifier
- Polysorbate 20 is a solubiliser: it dissolves small amounts of oil or fragrance into a watery formula so nothing separates or floats.
- snail secretion filtrate humectant
- Snail Secretion Filtrate is the mucin a snail produces, filtered for cosmetic use, and it is the ingredient the Korean snail category is built on. It carries glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid, and it is used for hydration and a smoother-looking surface.
- 1,2-hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- xanthan gum thickener
- Xanthan Gum is a polysaccharide made by fermenting sugar. It thickens a watery formula into a gel and holds the whole thing in suspension so nothing separates. Too much of it and a serum turns stringy, which is why it appears in fractions of a percent.
- acrylates/c10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer thickener
- This is a carbomer relative with fatty side chains, so it thickens and stabilises an emulsion at the same time. It gives a light gel-cream body rather than a heavy one.
- sodium hyaluronate humectant
- Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
- beta-glucan polysaccharide
- Beta-Glucan is a polysaccharide from oats or yeast. It holds a large amount of water, forms a soothing film, and is one of the ingredients formulators reach for in products aimed at reactive skin.
- rh-oligopeptide-1 peptide
- A short peptide produced in a recombinant human sequence, which is what the rh prefix records. It is used in formulas built around the look of firmness and recovery.
30 more explained
- polyglutamic acid humectant
- Polyglutamic Acid comes from fermented soy and holds several times more water than hyaluronic acid for its weight. It forms a light film on the surface, so it is often layered with hyaluronic rather than replacing it.
- colloidal gold colorant
- Gold in a formula is metallic gold beaten or milled into flakes so fine they stay suspended. It is inert, sits on the surface, and is there for the visible glint.
- saccharomyces ferment ferment
- Saccharomyces Ferment is a brewer's yeast ferment. It supplies amino acids, sugars and B vitamins and is used as a conditioning, hydrating ferment.
- centella asiatica extract plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
- portulaca oleracea extract plant extract
- Portulaca Oleracea is purslane. Its extract is unusually high in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants for a plant, and Korean formulas use it for the look of reddened, reactive skin.
- phellinus linteus extract plant extract
- Sanghuang, a hard bracket mushroom used in Korean and Chinese herbal tradition. Its extract carries water-holding polysaccharides.
- chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract plant extract
- Chamomile Flower Extract is one of the oldest ingredients in skincare, carrying bisabolol and chamazulene. It is used for the look of redness in formulas for reactive skin.
- vitex agnus-castus extract plant extract
- Chaste tree extract, carrying flavonoids and iridoids. It is used as a conditioning plant extract.
- opuntia coccinellifera fruit extract plant extract
- Prickly pear fruit extract. The fruit carries betalain pigments and water-holding sugars, and it colours a formula pink.
- nelumbo nucifera leaf extract plant extract
- Nelumbo Nucifera is the sacred lotus. Its leaf extract carries flavonoids and is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract.
- zanthoxylum piperitum fruit extract plant extract
- Zanthoxylum Piperitum is Korean pepper. Its fruit extract is used as a conditioning plant extract and is often paired with pulsatilla and usnea in Korean formulas.
- pulsatilla koreana extract plant extract
- Korean pasque flower extract, a native anemone relative. It is used as a conditioning plant extract, usually beside other Korean herbal extracts.
- camellia sinensis leaf extract plant extract
- Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant. Green tea leaf extract carries catechins, among the most studied plant antioxidants, and is used for the look of redness and oily shine.
- artemisia vulgaris extract plant extract
- Common mugwort extract. It is the same genus as the Korean mugwort artemisia princeps and is used for the look of reddened, reactive skin.
- propolis extract plant extract
- Propolis is the resin bees collect from tree buds and use to seal the hive. It is rich in flavonoids, carries a warm amber colour and scent, and is used for the look of dull, stressed skin. It is a bee product, so it is worth knowing about if you react to those.
- coptis chinensis root extract plant extract
- Chinese goldthread root, a traditional herbal ingredient carrying berberine. It is bright yellow and is used in formulas aimed at the look of congested skin.
- usnea barbata (lichen) extract plant extract
- Beard lichen extract, carrying usnic acid. It resists microbes, so formulas use it both as a plant extract and as part of a preservative system.
- arctium lappa root extract plant extract
- Burdock root extract, the ueong eaten in Korea. It carries inulin and polyphenols and is used as a conditioning extract.
- hydroxyacetophenone preservative booster
- Hydroxyacetophenone is an antioxidant that also strengthens a preservative system, so a formula needs less traditional preservative. Korean formulas pair it with 1,2-hexanediol constantly.
- tromethamine pH adjuster
- Tromethamine neutralises acidic thickeners such as carbomer so they gel, and holds a formula near skin-friendly pH. It is used at a fraction of a percent.
- ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- citrus aurantifolia (lime) oil fragrance component
- Lime oil, an essential oil pressed from the peel. It scents a formula strongly, and expressed citrus oils can make skin more sensitive to sun.
- citrus aurantium bergamia (bergamot) fruit oil fragrance component
- Bergamot Fruit Oil is a citrus essential oil and the top note of eau de cologne. It scents a formula; citrus oils are the aromatic class most likely to bother reactive skin.
- pinus sylvestris leaf oil fragrance component
- Scots Pine Leaf Oil is a conifer essential oil used to scent a formula.
- eucalyptus globulus leaf oil fragrance component
- Eucalyptus Leaf Oil is an essential oil carrying eucalyptol. It scents a formula sharply and gives a cooling sensation.
- hippophae rhamnoides oil emollient
- Sea buckthorn oil, deep orange from its carotenoid content, which is often why a formula carrying it has a colour nobody added. It is high in the unusual fatty acid palmitoleic acid.
- citrus limon (lemon) peel oil fragrance
- Cold-pressed lemon peel oil. Citrus peel oils carry limonene and can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, which is why leave-on formulas use them sparingly.
- citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil fragrance component
- Sweet Orange Peel Oil is a citrus essential oil carrying limonene. It scents a formula, and limonene is one of the components EU labelling names separately.
- disodium edta chelator
- EDTA is a chelator: it locks up trace metal ions from water and packaging that would otherwise turn a formula cloudy, off-colour or rancid. It does nothing to skin and appears at a fraction of a percent.
- linalool fragrance component
- Linalool is a floral aromatic found in lavender, bergamot and coriander. It is one of the 26 fragrance components EU labelling requires to be declared by name.

How to use
- Use as the first step of a PM double cleanse on dry skin and dry hands. Massage over the face for about a minute to lift makeup and sunscreen, add a little water to emulsify, then rinse or follow with a foam cleanser rather than skipping straight to toner.
Worth knowing
- Very reactive or actively broken-out skin should patch test first, since any oil cleanser can feel heavy on inflamed areas.
- Introduce any new product gradually rather than adding several new steps to a routine at once, so any reaction is easy to trace back to the right cause.
