How it works

The panel on this cream names six forms of centella asiatica rather than one: Centella Asiatica Leaf Water, Centella Asiatica Extract, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid, Madecassoside. Centella Asiatica Leaf Water is the distilled water of the centella leaf, used in place of plain water as a formula base. It is far more dilute than the extract, so it sets the base rather than supplying the actives. On this panel it sits alongside Beeswax, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract and Portulaca Oleracea Extract. Beeswax is the wax bees build comb from. In a formula it thickens the oil phase and forms a breathable, water-resisting film, which is what makes a balm hold its shape.

Key benefits

  • Six forms of centella asiatica on one panel, not a single token inclusion
  • Beeswax on the same panel, the formula's occlusive
  • Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract on the same panel, the formula's plant extract
  • 100 ml to a unit
  • Korean GS1 barcode matched against a Korea sourcing supplier's record for this item

Key actives

Centella Asiatica Leaf Water

Centella Asiatica Leaf Water is the distilled water of the centella leaf, used in place of plain water as a formula base. It is far more dilute than the extract, so it sets the base rather than supplying the actives.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Asiaticoside

Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised.

Madecassic Acid

Madecassic Acid is the fourth centella triterpene. A list that names all four is telling you the extract was standardised rather than simply pressed, which is the difference between a cica claim and a cica formula.

Beeswax

Beeswax is the wax bees build comb from. In a formula it thickens the oil phase and forms a breathable, water-resisting film, which is what makes a balm hold its shape.

Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract

Melia Azadirachta is neem. Its leaf and flower extracts are long-standing Ayurvedic ingredients, and Korean formulas use them in products aimed at the look of congested, blemish-prone skin.

Portulaca Oleracea Extract

Portulaca Oleracea is purslane. Its extract is unusually high in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants for a plant, and Korean formulas use it for the look of reddened, reactive skin.

How to use

  1. Apply after your serum or ampoule, once those have absorbed.
  2. Take a small amount of cream and warm it between the fingertips.
  3. Spread evenly over the face and neck in upward, outward motions.
  4. Let it settle for a minute before applying sunscreen or makeup, rather than skipping straight to the next product.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test before the first full-face application if your skin is easily irritated.
  • Keep away from broken or actively irritated skin until it has calmed down.
