How it works

The 8 Hyaluronic Acid Liposome Skin Booster is a 150ml serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The humectant it is built around is Sodium Hyaluronate, named fifth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Niacinamide, Adenosine and Tocopherol, so the humectant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Sodium Hyaluronate stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the serum Anua sells in Korea, Sodium Hyaluronate and all.

Key benefits

  • Sodium Hyaluronate, the humectant this serum is built around
  • Niacinamide and Adenosine on the same list, actives
  • Tocopherol on the same list, an antioxidant
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein on the same list, a protein
  • Glycine and Serine further down the same list
  • Glutamic Acid and Aspartic Acid further down the same list

Key actives

Sodium Hyaluronatehumectant

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it. The name on the box points at it, and it is named fifth on this serum's own ingredient list.

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. The panel names it fourth on this serum's list, beside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. The panel names it fourteenth on this serum's list, beside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Tocopherolantioxidant

Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer. The panel names it nineteenth on this serum's list, beside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Proteinprotein

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is plant protein cut into water-soluble fragments. It forms a light conditioning film that holds water at the surface. It is named eighth on this serum's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

How to use

  1. Pour a small amount into your palms straight after cleansing, while the skin is still slightly damp.
  2. Press it in with flat hands rather than rubbing, and give it fifteen seconds before deciding whether to add a second pass.
  3. Follow with your serum and then your moisturiser, since a booster on its own has nothing to hold the water in.
  4. Do not use it as your only hydration step, because a watery layer without a cream over it evaporates.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this serum on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Sodium Hyaluronate on the list.
  • Introduce this serum on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Sodium Hyaluronate rather than to three changes at once.

  • People with dry, flaky skin are more likely to see a benefit from using vitamin E because it enhances moisturization.
