How it works

The Heartleaf 77 Hyaluronic Acid Soothing Toner is a 250ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The humectant it is built around is Sodium Hyaluronate, named eighteenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin and Zinc PCA, so the humectant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Sodium Hyaluronate stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. Anua sells this Sodium Hyaluronate toner in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • Sodium Hyaluronate, the humectant this toner is built around
  • Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin and Zinc PCA on the same list, actives
  • Lactobacillus Ferment on the same list, a ferment
  • Isoquercitrin and Quercetin further down the same list
  • Glycereth-26 and Panthenol further down the same list
  • Sodium Hyaluronate named eighteenth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Sodium Hyaluronatehumectant

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it. It is the entry this toner is named after, and the list carries it.

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizateactive

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a water-soluble salt derived from licorice root. It is named eleventh on this toner's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Allantoinactive

Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin. The panel names it seventeenth on this toner's list, beside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Zinc PCAactive

Zinc PCA pairs zinc with the humectant PCA. It is used in oily and blemish-prone formulas for the look of shine and visible pores, and it hydrates at the same time. It is named twenty-first on this toner's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Lactobacillus Fermentferment

Lactobacillus Ferment is the liquid left after lactobacillus bacteria have fermented a plant or milk substrate. It carries the small molecules the fermentation produced, including lactic acid and amino acids, and is used for the look of dull, uneven skin. It is named twenty-third on this toner's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

How to use

  1. Use the Heartleaf 77 Hyaluronic Acid Soothing Toner straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp.
  2. Pour a coin-sized pool into your palms and press it over the face in two passes rather than dragging it around with a cotton pad.
  3. It goes on before serum and moisturizer, and the damp layer it leaves is what the step above it holds on to.
  4. Twice a day, every day. Do not let it dry down completely before the next layer goes on, or you lose the reason for applying it to damp skin.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Sodium Hyaluronate on the list.
  • Introduce this toner on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Sodium Hyaluronate rather than to three changes at once.
