How it works

This is a watery toner with an acid step built into it, so it does the job of a resurfacing treatment in the shape of a toner. Swept over clean dry skin, it loosens the dulling build up sitting on the surface, and the skin underneath catches light more evenly afterwards. The gain from a resurfacing step is textural and it is easy to overdo, so frequency is the setting that matters most. A scrub does something similar by force, while an acid step does it chemically and with no rubbing at all. The result you can judge yourself is whether your surface feels smoother the morning after you use it.

Key benefits

  • Glycolic Acid sits near the top on this product's own ingredient list, an AHA that lifts dull surface cells for a smoother, brighter finish.
  • A multifunctional glycol that carries moisture and helps preserve the formula, and Butylene Glycol is right there in this product's ingredient list, near the top.
  • On this formula's own list, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract shows up near the top. It is a cica botanical used to calm visible redness after exfoliation or sun exposure.

Key actives

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is the smallest of the alpha hydroxy acids, used to loosen the dull build up at the very top of the surface so skin catches light more evenly.

Glycerin

Glycerin is the workhorse humectant of skincare: it draws water into the top of the surface and keeps a formula from feeling tight as it settles.

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA is one of the water binding compounds skin already makes, added to formulas so the surface holds its own moisture more comfortably.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the botanical Korean formulas reach for first when the goal is comfort on reactive skin, and it is the plant behind the cica category.

Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract

Korean Mugwort is the calming botanical this market built a whole category on, used for comfort on skin that flushes and reacts easily.

How to use

  1. Cleanse and pat the skin fully dry, since water on the surface dilutes an acid step.
  2. Sweep a small amount over the face with a cotton pad, keeping well clear of the eye area and lips.
  3. Wait a minute, then follow with a plain moisturiser to leave the skin comfortable afterwards.
  4. Do not use it on the same night as another strong exfoliating step, and never on broken or sunburnt skin.

Worth knowing

  • Start with two nights a week rather than every night, and stop for a few days if your skin feels sore.
  • Do not use it on the same night as another strong exfoliating step, and keep it away from broken skin.

  • As we age, the glue that holds our skin cells together becomes denser, which slows down the natural cell turnover process.
