How it works

The Deep Water Surge Soothing Cream is a 80g cream, used as the last skincare step, morning and evening, over serum. The active it is built around is Niacinamide, named fifth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Adenosine, Sodium DNA and Bromelain, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Niacinamide stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cream format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the cream Arencia sells in Korea, Niacinamide and all.

Key benefits

  • Niacinamide, the active this cream is built around
  • Adenosine, Sodium DNA, Bromelain and Protease on the same list, actives
  • Lipase and Kojic Dipalmitate further down the same list
  • Papain and Tripeptide-1 further down the same list
  • Niacinamide named fifth on the manufacturer list printed on this page
  • Original Korean Formula, the cream sold on Korean shelves

Key actives

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. On this cream's own ingredient list it is named fifth.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. The panel names it thirteenth on this cream's list, beside Niacinamide.

Sodium DNAactive

Sodium DNA is the salt of DNA, in Korean skincare almost always salmon derived, and it is the ingredient behind the PDRN category. It is used as a humectant and for the look of tired skin; the fragments themselves are what the name PDRN refers to. The panel names it thirty-fourth on this cream's list, beside Niacinamide.

Bromelainactive

Bromelain is the protein splitting enzyme group found in pineapple stem and fruit. In cosmetics it is used in enzyme formulas that loosen the keratin holding dead surface cells together. The panel names it forty-second on this cream's list, beside Niacinamide.

Proteaseactive

Protease is an enzyme that breaks down protein. In a cleanser or peel it loosens the protein bonds holding dead surface cells together, which is a gentler route to smoothness than an acid or a scrub. It is named forty-fifth on this cream's list, alongside Niacinamide.

How to use

  1. Use it at the end of your routine, once your toner and serum have settled.
  2. Warm a small amount between your fingertips and press it over the face and neck rather than rubbing.
  3. Add a second thin layer on the areas that still feel tight instead of one heavy layer everywhere.
  4. Do not apply it before your serum, since nothing thinner will get through a cream that is already on the skin.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this cream on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Niacinamide on the list.
  • Introduce this cream on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Niacinamide rather than to three changes at once.
