How it works

The Clean it Zero Calming Cleansing Balm is a 100ml cleansing balm, used as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin, before any water reaches the face. The active it is built around is Guaiazulene, named sixteenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid and Madecassoside, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Guaiazulene stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cleansing balm format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the cleansing balm BANILA CO sells in Korea, Guaiazulene and all.

Key benefits

  • Guaiazulene, the active this cleansing balm is built around
  • Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid, Madecassoside and Madecassic Acid on the same list, actives
  • Lactobacillus Ferment and Centella Asiatica Extract further down the same list
  • Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract and Synthetic Wax further down the same list
  • Guaiazulene named sixteenth on the manufacturer list printed on this page
  • Original Korean Formula, the cleansing balm sold on Korean shelves

Key actives

Guaiazuleneactive

Guaiazulene is the deep blue compound distilled from chamomile and guaiac wood, and it is what colours a blue formula naturally. It is used for the look of reactive, reddened skin. On this cleansing balm's own ingredient list it is named sixteenth.

Asiaticosideactive

Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised. It is named twenty-first on this cleansing balm's list, alongside Guaiazulene.

Asiatic Acidactive

Asiatic Acid is the third of centella's four triterpenes and the aglycone form, meaning it has no attached sugar. It is oil soluble, so it turns up in cica creams and balms more than in watery layers. It is named twenty-second on this cleansing balm's list, alongside Guaiazulene.

Madecassosideactive

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. The panel names it twenty-third on this cleansing balm's list, beside Guaiazulene.

Madecassic Acidactive

Madecassic Acid is the fourth centella triterpene. A list that names all four is telling you the extract was standardised rather than simply pressed, which is the difference between a cica claim and a cica formula. The panel names it twenty-fourth on this cleansing balm's list, beside Guaiazulene.

How to use

  1. Scoop with a dry spatula onto dry skin, since water on the face first stops a balm doing its job.
  2. Massage for about a minute, working over the nose, jaw and hairline where sunscreen collects.
  3. Wet your fingers and keep going until the balm turns milky, then rinse it fully away with lukewarm water.
  4. Do not stop after the balm, because a second wash is what clears the rest of the day off the face.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this cleansing balm on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Guaiazulene on the list.
  • Introduce this cleansing balm on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Guaiazulene rather than to three changes at once.
