How it works
An oil-free lotion is for skin that wants the sealing step without the weight of a cream, which is a real gap in most routines. This is COSRX's birch sap lotion, and the name is doing the work: it is a lotion rather than a cream, and the finish is light. It goes on last, over serum, morning and evening, and in the morning sunscreen follows it. Skin that turns shiny by midday but still tightens after cleansing is the case it fits. Twice a day, and on dry patches a richer cream can go over the top of it at night.
Key benefits
- Birch sap leads the list at position one; plain water does not appear until twenty-two of twenty-four
- Dimethicone at four gives an oil-free lotion its glide without a heavy after-feel
- Allantoin and panthenol work mid list for comfort without adding richness
- Sodium hyaluronate near the end still holds water at the surface, small as its position suggests the amount is
- A fast-absorbing texture built for oily or combination skin that finds most creams too heavy
- COSRX verifies this unit itself: batch and expiry check on the brand's own site, not ours
Key actives
Betula Platyphylla Japonica JuiceThe primary carrier of the formula, replacing water as the base
First on the list, ahead of every other ingredient including plain water, which trails at position twenty-two. Birch sap is a traditional Korean spring-tapped ingredient valued for a light, non-greasy hydration; running it as the actual base rather than a late addition is what the product name is describing.
DimethiconeA silicone that gives an oil-free formula its slip without weight
Fourth on the list. It is what lets a water-thin lotion spread evenly and finish smooth rather than patchy, without introducing the heaviness of a plant or mineral oil.
AllantoinA soothing agent supporting comfort on freshly cleansed or exfoliated skin
Fifteenth on the list, paired with panthenol just after it. Both are classic Korean-formulation comfort ingredients, included here to offset any tightness from a genuinely lightweight, low-oil lotion.
Sodium HyaluronateA humectant near the end of the list, holding water at the surface
Nineteenth of twenty-four ingredients. Its position means it is a supporting humectant rather than the formula's main hydration source, which is the birch sap base doing the bulk of that work.
COSRX Oil-Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap
What does the COSRX Birch Sap Lotion actually do?
It is a lightweight, oil-free lotion built on birch sap as its primary base rather than water: birch sap leads the ingredient list, and plain water does not appear until position twenty-two of twenty-four. Dimethicone gives it glide, and allantoin, panthenol and sodium hyaluronate carry the hydration and comfort side, for skin that wants water without weight.
Does it contain fragrance?
Yes. Parfum sits at position fourteen, with limonene and citral declared as its allergen components. If you avoid added fragrance specifically, this is the one product in the birch sap family to check the list on before buying.
Is it too light for dry skin?
It can be. This is built for oily and combination skin as a fast-absorbing daily lotion, and on genuinely dry or dehydrated skin it usually needs a richer cream layered over it, especially in colder months.
Can I use this under sunscreen and makeup?
Yes, that is exactly the finish it is built for. The texture sets to a soft matte within about a minute with no oily residue, which is what lets sunscreen and makeup sit on top without sliding.

How to use
- Use the Oil-Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap as the last skincare step, morning and evening, over serum.
- One or two pumps for the face and neck, pressed in with flat palms rather than rubbed.
- Serum first, this second, then sunscreen in the morning. On dry skin a richer cream can go over it at night.
- Twice a day. Do not decant it into a smaller jar to travel with; an emulsion in a pump is packaged that way to keep it stable.
Worth knowing
- This formula contains parfum, with limonene and citral declared as its allergen components. If you avoid added fragrance, this is not the birch sap product for you.
- Cetearyl alcohol and cetearyl olivate are fatty alcohol emulsifiers, not the drying solvent alcohol; they will not sting.
- This is a genuinely light lotion, not a rich cream. On dry or very dehydrated skin it usually wants a heavier layer on top in cold weather.
