How it works

The Dermoisture Barrier.D Liquid Toner is a 200ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The barrier lipid it is built around is Ceramide NP, named twenty-third on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Cholesterol, 7-Dehydrocholesterol and Pollen Extract, so the barrier lipid is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Ceramide NP stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the toner Dr.G sells in Korea, Ceramide NP and all.

Key benefits

  • Ceramide NP, the barrier lipid this toner is built around
  • Cholesterol and 7-Dehydrocholesterol on the same list, barrier lipids
  • Pollen Extract on the same list, a plant extract
  • Triethylhexanoin on the same list, an emollient
  • Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil Unsaponifiables and Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil further down the same list
  • Calcium Chloride and Glycereth-26 further down the same list

Key actives

Ceramide NPbarrier lipid

Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy. On this toner's own ingredient list it is named twenty-third.

Cholesterolbarrier lipid

Cholesterol is the third of the three lipids the outer layer of skin is built from, with ceramides and fatty acids. Formulas that carry all three are following the ratio skin itself holds. It is named twenty-eighth on this toner's list, alongside Ceramide NP.

7-Dehydrocholesterolbarrier lipid

7-Dehydrocholesterol is the sterol skin holds as the precursor to vitamin D. In a formula it behaves as a barrier lipid, closely related to cholesterol. The panel names it thirty-first on this toner's list, beside Ceramide NP.

Pollen Extractplant extract

Extract of flower pollen collected by bees. Pollen carries amino acids, sugars, vitamins and flavonoids, and the extract is used as a conditioning ingredient. The panel names it thirty-second on this toner's list, beside Ceramide NP.

Triethylhexanoinemollient

Triethylhexanoin is a light ester emollient that softens skin and disperses pigment. It absorbs cleanly and is often used to thin a heavy oil phase. The panel names it ninth on this toner's list, beside Ceramide NP.

How to use

  1. Use it right after cleansing while the face is still slightly damp, which is when a watery layer spreads furthest.
  2. Pour a little into your palms or onto a cotton round and press it over the face rather than rubbing it in.
  3. Follow within a minute with your serum and moisturizer, so the water you just added has something to sit under.
  4. Do not let it dry down completely before the next step, since a bare surface undoes most of what this layer is for.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Ceramide NP on the list.
  • Introduce this toner on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Ceramide NP rather than to three changes at once.
