How it works

The R.E.D Blemish Clear Soothing Toner is a 300ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The active it is built around is Niacinamide, named fifth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Madecassoside, Asiaticoside and Asiatic Acid, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Niacinamide stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the toner Dr.G sells in Korea, Niacinamide and all.

Key benefits

  • Niacinamide, the active this toner is built around
  • Madecassoside, Asiaticoside and Asiatic Acid on the same list, actives
  • Ceramide NP on the same list, a barrier lipid
  • Beta-Glucan and Portulaca Oleracea Extract further down the same list
  • Centella Asiatica Extract and Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract further down the same list
  • Niacinamide named fifth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. On this toner's own ingredient list it is named fifth.

Madecassosideactive

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. It is named twenty-third on this toner's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Asiaticosideactive

Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised. It is named twenty-sixth on this toner's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Asiatic Acidactive

Asiatic Acid is the third of centella's four triterpenes and the aglycone form, meaning it has no attached sugar. It is oil soluble, so it turns up in cica creams and balms more than in watery layers. It is named twenty-seventh on this toner's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Ceramide NPbarrier lipid

Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy. It is named twenty-fourth on this toner's list, alongside Niacinamide.

How to use

  1. Press it on as the first leave-on step of the morning and evening, on skin still damp from the sink.
  2. Two or three passes with the palms cover the whole face and use less than a cotton round would.
  3. Go over the sides of the nose and the jaw, the two places most people leave dry.
  4. Avoid dragging a soaked cotton round across the cheeks, since the pull is harder on the skin than the liquid is.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Niacinamide on the list.
  • Introduce this toner on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Niacinamide rather than to three changes at once.
