Key benefits

  • Madecassoside, the active this sheet mask is built around
  • Madecassic Acid, Asiaticoside and Asiatic Acid on the same list, actives
  • Ceramide NP on the same list, a barrier lipid
  • Beta-Glucan and Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract further down the same list
  • Centella Asiatica Extract and Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract further down the same list
  • Madecassoside named twenty-seventh on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Madecassosideactive

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. On this sheet mask's own ingredient list it is named twenty-seventh.

Madecassic Acidactive

Madecassic Acid is the fourth centella triterpene. A list that names all four is telling you the extract was standardised rather than simply pressed, which is the difference between a cica claim and a cica formula. The panel names it twenty-ninth on this sheet mask's list, beside Madecassoside.

Asiaticosideactive

Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised. It is named thirtieth on this sheet mask's list, alongside Madecassoside.

Asiatic Acidactive

Asiatic Acid is the third of centella's four triterpenes and the aglycone form, meaning it has no attached sugar. It is oil soluble, so it turns up in cica creams and balms more than in watery layers. The panel names it thirty-first on this sheet mask's list, beside Madecassoside.

Ceramide NPbarrier lipid

Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy. The panel names it twenty-fifth on this sheet mask's list, beside Madecassoside.

How to use

  1. Unfold onto a cleansed face, leave on for fifteen to twenty minutes, then remove and pat any remaining essence into the skin.

How it works

The R.E.D Blemish Cool Soothing Mask is a 30g sheet mask, used after toner, in place of your serum step, in the evening. The active it is built around is Madecassoside, named twenty-seventh on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Madecassic Acid, Asiaticoside and Asiatic Acid, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Madecassoside stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the sheet mask format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the sheet mask Dr.G sells in Korea, Madecassoside and all.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this sheet mask on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Madecassoside on the list.
  • Introduce this sheet mask on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Madecassoside rather than to three changes at once.
