The skin types we would put first are dry skin, dehydrated skin and normal skin. Dehydration and dryness are different problems, and oily skin can be dehydrated, which is why this suits more skin types than a rich cream would.

Do I need a cream as well as an emulsion?

Not always. On oily or combination skin an emulsion is often enough on its own, especially in summer. On dry skin in cold weather it works better as a first moisturising layer with a cream on top of the areas that need it. Doubling the emulsion instead of adding a cream rarely gives the same comfort.

How it works

An emulsion is a milky lotion, thinner than a cream and thicker than an essence, which is exactly the gap it exists to fill. A small amount covers the face, and the surface afterwards feels smooth rather than coated. Hydration is water held in the top of the surface, and what you put over it decides whether it stays, which is why the order of layers matters as much as the layers. That is the difference from a rich cream, which suits dry skin in winter but feels like too much on skin that runs oily. The result you can judge yourself is whether your skin still feels comfortable hours after you finish your routine.

How to use

Use it after your toner, essence and serum, when those have settled.
Warm a small amount between your fingers and smooth it over the face and neck in upward strokes.
Add a richer cream over the top on dry areas in winter, rather than doubling the amount of this.

Water solvent: Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
Hydrolyzed Collagen protein: Hydrolyzed Collagen is collagen broken into fragments small enough to dissolve in water. It cannot become collagen in skin; what it does is hold water at the surface and leave a smooth, conditioned film.
Butylene Glycol humectant: Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
Adansonia Digitata Fruit Extract plant extract: Baobab fruit extract. The dry pulp is high in vitamin C, pectin and organic acids, and the extract is used as a conditioning antioxidant botanical.
Glycerin humectant: Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate emollient: Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate is a light ester emollient that gives a dry, silky finish and disperses pigment evenly.
Cyclopentasiloxane silicone: Cyclopentasiloxane is a volatile silicone: it spreads a formula thin and smooth then evaporates, leaving no residue. It is the silicone behind a dry, powdery primer finish.
Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin) emollient: Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin) is a synthetic hydrocarbon emollient. It gives a smooth, silicone-like glide and is completely stable, so it does not go rancid.
Polysorbate 60 emulsifier: Polysorbate 60 is a water-loving emulsifier used with a fatty co-emulsifier to build stable lotions and creams.
Cyclohexasiloxane silicone: Cyclohexasiloxane is a volatile silicone used for a light, fast-spreading feel that leaves nothing behind.
Adansonia Digitata Seed Oil emollient: Baobab seed oil, balanced between oleic and linoleic acid so it absorbs at a middling speed, and unusually stable against oxidation.
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil occlusive: Plant oil hardened by hydrogenation. It behaves as a soft solid, so it gives balms and sticks their body and slows water loss from the surface.
