How it works

Colloidal Sulfur is named on the ingredient panel on this toner. Colloidal Sulfur is elemental sulfur milled fine enough to disperse in water. It is used in masks and spot products for the look of congested, oily skin, and it carries its own faint sulphur smell. On this panel it sits alongside Niacinamide, Beta-Glucan and Allantoin. Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

Key actives

Colloidal Sulfur

Niacinamide

Beta-Glucan

Beta-Glucan is a polysaccharide from oats or yeast. It holds a large amount of water, forms a soothing film, and is one of the ingredients formulators reach for in products aimed at reactive skin.

Allantoin

Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin.

How to use

  1. Use the Red Toner straight after cleansing, in the evening, while the face is still damp.
  2. Pour a coin-sized pool into your palms and press it over the face in two passes rather than dragging it around with a cotton pad.
  3. It goes on before serum and moisturizer, and the damp layer it leaves is what the step above it holds on to. Salicylic acid is the entry that puts this step in the evening rather than the morning.
  4. Start at two or three evenings a week and build up from there, because salicylic acid is on this list. Do not use it in the same routine as another resurfacing acid or a retinoid.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before the first full-face application, especially on skin that reacts easily to new products.
  • Stop use and rinse off if stinging, burning, or new redness shows up rather than pushing through discomfort.

  • Niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of pores in a few ways. By strengthening the skin barrier and improving elasticity, pores appear less noticeable and more even.
