Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water plant extract

Witch hazel distillate, used in place of part of the plain water in a formula. It is much more dilute than the extract, and commercial witch hazel water often carries alcohol.

Butylene Glycol humectant

Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.

Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract plant extract

Lemon balm extract, a mint-family herb rich in rosmarinic acid. It is used as an antioxidant conditioning extract with a light lemon scent.

Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract plant extract

Peppermint leaf extract, the water-based extract rather than the essential oil, so it carries far less menthol. It is used as a refreshing herbal extract.

Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract plant extract

Lavender Flower Extract is the water-based extract rather than the essential oil, so it is much milder and less aromatic.

Malus Domestica Fruit Extract plant extract

Apple fruit extract, carrying malic acid, sugars and polyphenols. It is used as a conditioning extract and a mild source of fruit acid.

Rice Ferment Filtrate (Sake) ferment

Rice Ferment Filtrate is the clear liquid from fermented rice, the same process that makes sake. It carries amino acids, sugars and organic acids and is used as a conditioning ferment.

Yeast Extract ferment

The soluble contents of yeast cells, carrying amino acids, peptides, sugars and B vitamins. It is used as a conditioning ingredient and as a source of beta glucan.

Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract plant extract

Rice bran extract, from the outer layer milled off white rice. Bran is the richest part of the grain, carrying ferulic acid, vitamin E and phytic acid.

Centella Asiatica Extract plant extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract plant extract

Polygonum Cuspidatum is Japanese knotweed, the main commercial source of resveratrol. Its root extract is used as an antioxidant plant extract.
