Key actives

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there.

Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid

Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is hyaluronic acid cut into much shorter fragments. The smaller the fragment, the further into the outer layer it can settle, which is why serums stack several sizes together instead of using one.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Mineral Salts

Mineral Salts is a collective declaration for the dissolved minerals in a water source such as sea water or thermal water. It describes the water rather than an added active.

Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract

Willow Bark Extract carries salicin, the plant compound salicylic acid is related to. The two are not interchangeable: willow bark is a mild clarifying extract, not a BHA exfoliant at the levels used in cosmetics.

How to use

  1. Use it right after cleansing while the face is still slightly damp, which is when a watery layer spreads furthest.
  2. Pour a little into your palms or onto a cotton round and press it over the face rather than rubbing it in.
  3. Follow within a minute with your serum and moisturizer, so the water you just added has something to sit under.
  4. Do not let it dry down completely before the next step, since a bare surface undoes most of what this layer is for.

How it works

The panel on this toner names three forms of hyaluronic acid rather than one: Hyaluronic Acid, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate. Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there. On this panel it sits alongside Centella Asiatica Extract, Mineral Salts and Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before a first full-face application, as with any new skincare product.
  • Introduce it into a routine one product at a time so any reaction can be traced to the right cause.

What skin-care professionals say about skin care, quoted from the medical sources linked beside each.

  • Hyaluronic acid helps bind water to collagen, which traps water in the skin. That helps make the skin more plump and full-looking.
