Key actives

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Asiatic Acid(10 Ppb)

Asiatic Acid is the third of centella's four triterpenes and the aglycone form, meaning it has no attached sugar. It is oil soluble, so it turns up in cica creams and balms more than in watery layers.

Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Water

Heartleaf water, taken from the whole plant above ground. Korean formulas use it as a base in place of water, where it is far more dilute than the extract of the same plant.

Palmitic Acid

Palmitic Acid is a saturated fatty acid present in skin's own lipids. It thickens a formula, stabilises the emulsion and softens skin.

Adenosine

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated.

How to use

  1. Apply as the last step of the routine, morning and/or night, smoothing over the whole face after serum or essence has absorbed.

How it works

The panel on this cream names seven forms of centella asiatica rather than one: Centella Asiatica Extract, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Centella Asiatica Root Extract, Asiatic Acid(10 Ppb), Asiaticoside(10 Ppb), Madecassic Acid(1 Ppb), Madecassoside(1 Ppb). On this panel it sits alongside Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Water, Palmitic Acid and Adenosine. Heartleaf water, taken from the whole plant above ground. Korean formulas use it as a base in place of water, where it is far more dilute than the extract of the same plant.

Worth knowing

  • On oilier skin, a thinner layer at night rather than morning is a common starting point.
