How it works

The Cica Mild Toner Pad is a toner pad in VT Cosmetics' line, and the entries doing the work on its list are Salicylic Acid, Centella Asiatica Extract and Sodium Hyaluronate. Salicylic Acid is a BHA exfoliant. Centella Asiatica Extract sits alongside it: a calming plant extract, the anchor of Korean cica skincare. Sodium Hyaluronate is a low-weight form of hyaluronic acid, for surface hydration. Asiaticoside is another of centella's active triterpenes. Madecassoside is also on the list: a centella-derived compound carried for its calming reputation.

How to use

  1. Use one pad from the Cica Mild Toner Pad straight after cleansing, in the evening.
  2. Sweep the textured side outward across the face, then press the smooth side over anywhere that felt tight.
  3. It replaces the toner step, so serum and moisturizer follow it in the usual order while skin is still damp. Salicylic acid is the entry that puts this step in the evening rather than the morning.
  4. Start at two or three evenings a week and build up from there, because salicylic acid is on this list. Do not use it in the same routine as another resurfacing acid or a retinoid.

Worth knowing

  • Propolis Extract is bee-derived, so this formula is not a vegan one.
  • Salicylic Acid pairs less well layered directly under a second exfoliating acid on the same night, so space them out if a routine runs both.

  • BHAs like salicylic acid get really deep into the pores, whereas the water-soluble ones don't go as deep.

  • Small, preliminary studies suggest that madecassoside can dial down inflammatory cellular messengers called cytokines, including those that are typically turned on during an acne flare.
