How it works
Water, Methylpropanediol and Propanediol form the fluid base, and Polymethyl Methacrylate, a soft focus powder, appears early on the list alongside Aluminum Chlorohydrate, an astringent salt not commonly seen in a hydrating toner. Kaolin, a mattifying clay, and Microcrystalline Cellulose sit mid list, the pairing that gives this toner its shine controlling character rather than a purely humectant one. Oryza Sativa Rice Extract and Rice Amino Acids sit further down for tone and conditioning support, and Panthenol, Ceramide NP and Sodium Hyaluronate close out the formula for comfort and hydration underneath the mattifying ingredients. Coptis Japonica Root Extract and Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract, two hanbang extracts, round out the mid formula. Because it combines clay and an astringent salt with rice extract, this toner reads as a shine focused finishing toner rather than a plain hydrating one.
Inside the formula
Inside the formula
- 8Panthenol
- 10Aluminum Chlorohydrate
- 12Kaolin
- 15Oryza Sativa
Where each key active sits on the declared ingredient list, by entry number. Position is proportion: the further forward, the larger its share.
How to use
- Cleanse first, then apply the toner with a cotton pad or patted in by hand.
- Focus a cotton pad application on the areas that run shiniest by midday, such as the forehead and nose.
- Follow with your serum once the toner has settled and any tightening feeling has passed.
- Do not use this daily if your skin is currently very dry or compromised, since the astringent and clay ingredients suit oilier skin more than a depleted barrier.
Is this toner hydrating or mattifying?
It leans mattifying, built around Kaolin clay and Aluminum Chlorohydrate, an astringent salt, rather than being a purely hydrating rice toner. Panthenol, Ceramide NP and Sodium Hyaluronate sit in the formula too, so it is not a harsh drying toner, but its main character is shine control.
Is this toner good for dry skin?
It can feel more drying than a purely hydrating toner because of the clay and astringent ingredients, so very dry or sensitive skin may prefer to use it occasionally rather than every day. Oily and combination skin tends to get the most consistent benefit from it.
What does rice do in this toner?
Oryza Sativa Rice Extract and Rice Amino Acids sit mid to late on the ingredient list, supporting tone and conditioning underneath the toner's mattifying ingredients. Rice is a supporting ingredient here rather than the toner's primary function.
Where does this toner go in a routine?
Apply it after cleansing, swept on with a cotton pad or patted in by hand, then move into your serum. Because it can feel slightly tightening as the clay sets, some people prefer to follow it a little sooner with their next hydrating step.
Does this toner contain fragrance?
No parfum or fragrance ingredient appears on this toner's own ingredient list. Any scent noticed comes from the botanical extracts in the formula rather than an added fragrance compound, so it should suit anyone who specifically avoids scented toners in their routine.
Not on the ingredient list below: fragrance or parfum, denatured or SD alcohol, essential oils, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.

29 of 30 explained
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Methylpropanediol humectant
- Methylpropanediol is a small glycol used to hydrate and to help water-soluble actives penetrate the outer layer of skin more evenly. It leaves almost no tack, which suits watery textures.
- Propanediol humectant
- Propanediol is a plant-derived glycol used in place of propylene glycol. It hydrates, carries actives into solution, and gives a lighter, less sticky slip than glycerin at the same strength.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Glycereth-26 humectant
- Glycereth-26 is a modified glycerin that hydrates with far less stickiness than glycerin itself. It is a common way to load water into a formula that has to stay light.
- Polymethyl Methacrylate absorbent
- Polymethyl Methacrylate is an acrylic polymer used as fine spheres. They give a smooth, powdery slip and blur the look of surface texture.
- Panthenol humectant
- Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.
- Hydroxyethyl Urea humectant
- Hydroxyethyl Urea is a humectant that holds a lot of water for its size and stays comfortable at high levels. It is used where a formula needs to feel deeply hydrating without oil.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Kaolin absorbent
- Kaolin is white clay, the mildest of the cosmetic clays. It absorbs oil and lifts loose debris from the surface without stripping, which is why it is the clay used on drier skin.
- Sodium Citrate pH adjuster
- Sodium Citrate is the salt of citric acid, used as a buffer: it holds a formula at a steady pH rather than pushing it in one direction. It is also a mild chelator.
17 more explained
- Microcrystalline Cellulose absorbent
- Microcrystalline Cellulose is purified cellulose ground fine. It thickens, holds powders in suspension and gives a soft, matte feel.
- Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract plant extract
- Rice Extract is the anchor of the Korean rice-skincare category. It carries starches, amino acids and ferulic acid, and it is used for the look of dullness and for a soft, blurred finish.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate active
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a water-soluble salt derived from licorice root. It is the licorice fraction Korean formulas use for the look of redness, and it is far more stable in water than the whole extract.
- Citric Acid pH adjuster
- Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
- Hydrogenated Lecithin emulsifier
- Hydrogenated Lecithin is lecithin with its unsaturated bonds filled in, which makes it far more stable. It emulsifies and is the standard shell for the liposomes that carry actives into the outer layer of skin.
- Coptis Japonica Root Extract plant extract
- Coptis Japonica is a traditional East Asian medicinal root, bright yellow from its berberine content. In skincare its extract is used for the look of congested, oily skin.
- Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract plant extract
- Ulmus Davidiana is Japanese elm, whose inner bark yields a naturally slippery mucilage. Korean formulas use the root extract for that cushioned feel and for the look of reactive skin.
- Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract plant extract
- Amaranth seed extract, carrying squalene, sterols and peptides. It is used as a conditioning extract.
- Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract plant extract
- Fig Fruit Extract carries fruit sugars, mild acids and a protein-digesting enzyme. It is used as a hydrating extract with a light smoothing effect.
- Centella Asiatica Extract plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
- Dextrin thickener
- Dextrin is a starch fragment used to thicken and to give a formula a light, powdery finish. It is also a common carrier for powdered extracts.
- Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Extract plant extract
- Cocoa Extract carries polyphenols and a little caffeine. It is used as an antioxidant plant extract and gives a faint warm tint.
- Ceramide NP barrier lipid
- Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy.
- Tocopherol antioxidant
- Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer.
- Sodium Hyaluronate humectant
- Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
- Rice Amino Acids amino acid
- Rice Amino Acids are rice protein broken all the way down to its individual amino acids. At that size they act as humectants and leave a soft finish.

Key actives
8Panthenol
Provitamin B5 supports comfort and hydration, balancing out the drying effect an astringent and a clay can otherwise have on their own.
10Aluminum Chlorohydrate
An astringent salt included early in the formula, the ingredient primarily responsible for this toner's mattifying, shine reducing effect.
12Kaolin
A mattifying clay positioned mid list that gives this toner a shine controlling character not typical of a purely hydrating toner formula.
15Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract
Rice extract sits further down the list alongside Rice Amino Acids, supporting tone and conditioning underneath the toner's mattifying ingredients.
Worth knowing
- Aluminum Chlorohydrate is an astringent ingredient, so very dry or sensitized skin may find this toner too drying for daily use and better suited to occasional use on oilier days.
- Kaolin clay in a toner can feel slightly tightening as it sets, which is expected from this formula rather than a sign of irritation.
