Yam Root Vegan Milk Toner

Yam root extract at 80 percent is the first ingredient on this 200 ml toner's own list, ahead of water, with ceramide NP and cholesterol behind it: a milk-textured first layer with a barrier lipid pair most toners never carry.

How it works

The Yam Root Vegan Milk Toner is a 200ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The barrier lipid it is built around is Ceramide NP, named thirteenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Cholesterol, Deoxyphytantriyl Palmitamide MEA and Hibiscus Esculentus Fruit Extract, so the barrier lipid is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Ceramide NP stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the toner Isntree sells in Korea, Ceramide NP and all.

Key benefits

  • Ceramide NP, the barrier lipid this toner is built around
  • Cholesterol and Deoxyphytantriyl Palmitamide MEA on the same list, barrier lipids
  • Hibiscus Esculentus Fruit Extract and Nelumbo Nucifera Root Extract on the same list, plant extracts
  • Undaria Pinnatifida Extract and Laminaria Japonica Extract further down the same list
  • Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Extract and Avena Sativa (Oat) Meal Extract further down the same list
  • Ceramide NP named thirteenth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Ceramide NPbarrier lipid

Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy. On this toner's own ingredient list it is named thirteenth.

Cholesterolbarrier lipid

Cholesterol is the third of the three lipids the outer layer of skin is built from, with ceramides and fatty acids. Formulas that carry all three are following the ratio skin itself holds. It is named fourteenth on this toner's list, alongside Ceramide NP.

Deoxyphytantriyl Palmitamide MEAbarrier lipid

A synthetic ceramide-like lipid. It sits in the spaces between skin cells the way skin's own ceramides do and helps hold water in. The panel names it thirty-third on this toner's list, beside Ceramide NP.

Hibiscus Esculentus Fruit Extractplant extract

Hibiscus Esculentus is okra, whose fruit is thick with mucilage. Its extract hydrates and gives a cushioned, slippery feel. The panel names it seventeenth on this toner's list, beside Ceramide NP.

Nelumbo Nucifera Root Extractplant extract

Lotus root extract. The root is starchy and mucilaginous, so the extract hydrates and leaves a soft, cushioned feel. The panel names it eighteenth on this toner's list, beside Ceramide NP.

How to use

  1. Use the Yam Root Vegan Milk Toner straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp.
  2. Pour a coin-sized pool into your palms and press it over the face in two passes rather than dragging it around with a cotton pad.
  3. It goes on before serum and moisturizer, and the damp layer it leaves is what the step above it holds on to.
  4. Twice a day, every day. Do not let it dry down completely before the next layer goes on, or you lose the reason for applying it to damp skin.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Ceramide NP on the list.
  • Introduce this toner on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Ceramide NP rather than to three changes at once.
