How it works

The panel on this toner names four forms of centella asiatica rather than one: Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid, Madecassoside, Madecassic Acid. Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised. On this panel it sits alongside Pinus Densiflora Leaf Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract and Glycoprotein. Pinus Densiflora is Korean red pine, a plant with a long history in Korean traditional use. The needle extract is used as an antioxidant plant extract.

Key benefits

  • Four forms of centella asiatica on one panel, not a single token inclusion
  • Pinus Densiflora Leaf Extract on the same panel, the formula's plant extract
  • Houttuynia Cordata Extract on the same panel, the formula's plant extract
  • 200 ml to a unit
  • Korean-market formula, with its Korean barcode and batch code intact on the box

Key actives

Asiaticoside

Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised.

Asiatic Acid

Asiatic Acid is the third of centella's four triterpenes and the aglycone form, meaning it has no attached sugar. It is oil soluble, so it turns up in cica creams and balms more than in watery layers.

Madecassoside

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams.

Madecassic Acid

Madecassic Acid is the fourth centella triterpene. A list that names all four is telling you the extract was standardised rather than simply pressed, which is the difference between a cica claim and a cica formula.

Pinus Densiflora Leaf Extract

Pinus Densiflora is Korean red pine, a plant with a long history in Korean traditional use. The needle extract is used as an antioxidant plant extract.

Houttuynia Cordata Extract

Houttuynia Cordata is heartleaf, and it is one of the two or three anchor plants of Korean calming skincare. Its extract carries quercitrin and other flavonoids and is used for the look of redness and blemish-prone skin.

Glycoprotein

Glycoproteins are proteins carrying sugar chains, usually supplied by a ferment. They hold water and leave a conditioning film.

How to use

  1. Use the For Men Pine Calming Cica Toner straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp.
  2. Pour a coin-sized pool into your palms and press it over the face in two passes rather than dragging it around with a cotton pad.
  3. It goes on before serum and moisturizer, and the damp layer it leaves is what the step above it holds on to.
  4. Twice a day, every day. Do not let it dry down completely before the next layer goes on, or you lose the reason for applying it to damp skin.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before first use on the face, especially if trying this brand or formula for the first time.
  • Store away from direct sunlight and heat so the formula and any actives inside stay stable through its shelf life.
