How it works

Madecassoside is named on the ingredient panel on this toner. Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. On this panel it sits alongside Hedera Helix (Ivy) Leaf/Stem Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract and Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Water. Ivy Leaf and Stem Extract carries saponins, plant compounds that foam slightly in water. It is used in body and eye formulas for the look of puffiness.

Key actives

Madecassoside

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Hedera Helix (Ivy) Leaf/Stem Extract

Ivy Leaf and Stem Extract carries saponins, plant compounds that foam slightly in water. It is used in body and eye formulas for the look of puffiness.

Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract

Apple fruit extract, carrying malic acid, sugars and polyphenols. It is used as a conditioning extract with a mild acid character.

Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Water

Jasmine distillate, used in place of plain water as a base. A flower water is far more dilute than the oil, so it sets the base and carries a faint scent.

How to use

  1. Apply it within a minute of cleansing while the skin is still damp from rinsing.
  2. Press a small pool in with flat hands, using an extra pass on the cheeks and less on the nose.
  3. Move to your serum while the skin is damp, since that is when the next layer spreads furthest.
  4. Do not scrub it on with a cotton pad, because friction on blemish prone skin is what makes things worse.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before a first full application if you are trying a new Korean formula for the first time, since a fragrance or botanical extract that suits most skin can still be the one thing an individual complexion does not tolerate.
  • Introduce any new Korean-market formula on its own for the first few uses before layering it with the rest of an existing routine, so any reaction is easy to trace to a single product.
