How it works

The SoonJung pH 5.5 Relief Toner is a 350ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The active it is built around is Madecassoside, named eleventh on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Tocopherol, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract and Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Madecassoside stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the toner ETUDE sells in Korea, Madecassoside and all.

Key benefits

  • Madecassoside, the active this toner is built around
  • Tocopherol on the same list, an antioxidant
  • Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract and Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract on the same list, plant extracts
  • Panthenol on the same list, a humectant
  • Polyglycerin-3 further down the same list
  • Madecassoside named eleventh on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Madecassosideactive

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. On this toner's own ingredient list it is named eleventh.

Tocopherolantioxidant

Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer. The panel names it fourteenth on this toner's list, beside Madecassoside.

Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extractplant extract

Scutellaria Baicalensis is Chinese skullcap. Its root extract carries baicalin, a well studied plant antioxidant, and it is used for the look of redness. It is named thirteenth on this toner's list, alongside Madecassoside.

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extractplant extract

Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant. Green tea leaf extract carries catechins, among the most studied plant antioxidants, and is used for the look of redness and oily shine. It is named fifteenth on this toner's list, alongside Madecassoside.

Panthenolhumectant

Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh. The panel names it fifth on this toner's list, beside Madecassoside.

How to use

  1. Cleanse first and go straight to this while your face is still damp, since a damp surface takes it evenly.
  2. Pour a small amount into your palm or onto a cotton pad and press it over the face and neck.
  3. Follow with your serum and moisturiser within a minute or two so the water has something to sit under.
  4. Do not rub it in with force or let your face dry off completely first, because both waste the step.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Madecassoside on the list.
  • Introduce this toner on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Madecassoside rather than to three changes at once.
