How it works

The Bija Trouble Toner is a 170ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The antioxidant it is built around is BHT, named seventeenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Tocopherol, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract and Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, so the antioxidant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the BHT stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. innisfree sells this BHT toner in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • BHT, the antioxidant this toner is built around
  • Tocopherol on the same list, an antioxidant
  • Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract and Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract on the same list, plant extracts
  • Glycereth-26 on the same list, a humectant
  • BHT named seventeenth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

BHTantioxidant

BHT is a synthetic antioxidant used in traces to stop the oils in a formula going rancid. It protects the product, not the skin. On this toner's own ingredient list it is named seventeenth.

Tocopherolantioxidant

Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer. It is named twentieth on this toner's list, alongside BHT.

Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extractplant extract

Willow Bark Extract carries salicin, the plant compound salicylic acid is related to. The two are not interchangeable: willow bark is a mild clarifying extract, not a BHA exfoliant at the levels used in cosmetics. It is named eighth on this toner's list, alongside BHT.

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extractplant extract

Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant. Green tea leaf extract carries catechins, among the most studied plant antioxidants, and is used for the look of redness and oily shine. The panel names it sixteenth on this toner's list, beside BHT.

Glycereth-26humectant

Glycereth-26 is a modified glycerin that hydrates with far less stickiness than glycerin itself. It is a common way to load water into a formula that has to stay light. The panel names it sixth on this toner's list, beside BHT.

How to use

  1. Use it right after cleansing, morning and night, on damp skin. Sweep a cotton pad over the face or pat two to three palmfuls in with clean hands, then move on to serum or the next step within a minute or two while the skin is still slightly damp.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with BHT on the list.
  • This list names Fragrance and Parfum, so skip it if fragrance components are something you avoid.
