Pinus Densiflora Leaf Extract plant extract: Pinus Densiflora is Korean red pine, a plant with a long history in Korean traditional use. The needle extract is used as an antioxidant plant extract.
Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Fruit Extract plant extract: Pumpkin fruit extract, carrying carotenoids, sugars and enzymes. It is used as a conditioning extract.
Acetyl Glucosamine active: Acetyl Glucosamine is the sugar unit hyaluronic acid is built from. It is used as a humectant and, at higher levels, for the look of uneven tone, often paired with niacinamide.
Thioctic Acid antioxidant: Thioctic Acid is alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant that dissolves in both water and oil, which is unusual. It is yellow and carries a faint sulfur smell.
Cholesterol barrier lipid: Cholesterol is the third of the three lipids the outer layer of skin is built from, with ceramides and fatty acids. Formulas that carry all three are following the ratio skin itself holds.
Hyaluronic Acid humectant: Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there.
Yeast Ferment Extract ferment: The extract of a yeast culture, carrying amino acids, sugars and B vitamins. It is used as a conditioning ferment.
Glycerin humectant: Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
Chrysanthellum Indicum Extract plant extract: Golden chamomile extract, carrying flavonoids and saponins. It is used for the look of reddened skin and visible surface vessels.
Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Flower Extract plant extract: Evening Primrose Flower Extract is used as a conditioning plant extract. The seed oil of the same plant is the better known part, and it is a different ingredient.
Fragaria Chiloensis (Strawberry) Fruit Extract plant extract: Beach strawberry fruit extract. It carries fruit acids, vitamin C and anthocyanins and is used as an antioxidant conditioning extract.
Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract plant extract: Lemon balm extract, a mint-family herb rich in rosmarinic acid. It is used as an antioxidant conditioning extract with a light lemon scent.
Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Extract plant extract: Horse chestnut extract, carrying escin. It is one of the classic plant ingredients used for the look of puffiness and surface vessels.
Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract plant extract: Fig Fruit Extract carries fruit sugars, mild acids and a protein-digesting enzyme. It is used as a hydrating extract with a light smoothing effect.
Prunus Persica (Peach) Fruit Extract plant extract: Peach Fruit Extract carries fruit sugars, vitamins and mild fruit acids. It is used as a hydrating extract.
Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Extract plant extract: Avocado fruit extract, the water-soluble fraction rather than the pressed oil. It is used as a conditioning extract.
Mentha Rotundifolia Leaf Extract plant extract: Apple mint leaf extract, a softer-scented mint than peppermint. It is used as a conditioning extract with a faint cooling character.
Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract ferment: This is soybean fermented by lactobacillus. The fermentation breaks soy proteins into smaller pieces, which is what makes the extract easier for a formula to carry.
Octyldodecanol emollient: Octyldodecanol is a branched fatty alcohol used as an emollient and as a solvent for pigments and mineral powders. It thickens slightly and leaves a soft finish.
Ceramide NP barrier lipid: Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy.
Phellinus Linteus Extract plant extract: Sanghuang, a hard bracket mushroom used in Korean and Chinese herbal tradition. Its extract carries water-holding polysaccharides.
Centella Asiatica Extract plant extract: Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Houttuynia Cordata Extract plant extract: Houttuynia Cordata is heartleaf, and it is one of the two or three anchor plants of Korean calming skincare. Its extract carries quercitrin and other flavonoids and is used for the look of redness and blemish-prone skin.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride emollient: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is the light fraction of coconut oil, with the heavy parts removed. It is the workhorse emollient of modern formulas: it softens skin, dissolves oil-soluble actives and absorbs without the greasy weight of a whole plant oil.
Hydrogenated Lecithin emulsifier: Hydrogenated Lecithin is lecithin with its unsaturated bonds filled in, which makes it far more stable. It emulsifies and is the standard shell for the liposomes that carry actives into the outer layer of skin.

Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract plant extract: Polygonum Cuspidatum is Japanese knotweed, the main commercial source of resveratrol. Its root extract is used as an antioxidant plant extract.
Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract plant extract: Scutellaria Baicalensis is Chinese skullcap. Its root extract carries baicalin, a well studied plant antioxidant, and it is used for the look of redness.
Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract plant extract: Licorice Root Extract carries glabridin and liquiritin. It is one of the classic plant ingredients used for the look of uneven tone and redness, and it appears in almost every brightening formula that avoids synthetic actives.
Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract plant extract: Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant. Green tea leaf extract carries catechins, among the most studied plant antioxidants, and is used for the look of redness and oily shine.
Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract plant extract: Lowbush blueberry fruit extract, high in anthocyanins. Berry extracts are used as plant antioxidants and can tint a formula.
Sodium Hyaluronate humectant: Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
Pearl Extract protein: Pearl Extract is ground pearl treated so its calcium carbonate and protein fractions disperse. It is used as a mineral-and-protein conditioning ingredient with a faint light-scattering effect.
Propolis Extract plant extract: Propolis is the resin bees collect from tree buds and use to seal the hive. It is rich in flavonoids, carries a warm amber colour and scent, and is used for the look of dull, stressed skin. It is a bee product, so it is worth knowing about if you react to those.
Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid humectant: Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is hyaluronic acid cut into much shorter fragments. The smaller the fragment, the further into the outer layer it can settle, which is why serums stack several sizes together instead of using one.
Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract plant extract: Rosemary Leaf Extract carries rosmarinic and carnosic acids, both effective antioxidants. It is often there to keep the oils in a formula from going rancid.
Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract plant extract: Chamomile Flower Extract is one of the oldest ingredients in skincare, carrying bisabolol and chamazulene. It is used for the look of redness in formulas for reactive skin.
Beta-Glucan polysaccharide: Beta-Glucan is a polysaccharide from oats or yeast. It holds a large amount of water, forms a soothing film, and is one of the ingredients formulators reach for in products aimed at reactive skin.

How to use

Use it as the final leave on step, after any serum has settled.
Warm a small amount between two fingertips first, since a rich cream spreads badly when cold.
Press it over the face and down the neck with flat hands rather than rubbing.
Do not use a thick layer under morning makeup, because a cushioned finish moves base around.

Worth knowing

Patch test on the jaw for two nights before applying it across the whole face.
Scoop with clean fingers or a spatula so an open jar stays in good condition.
